Designed by Eero Saarinen and officially opened in 1962 the main terminal was only actually completed in 1996, after airport authorities had decided to expand the building according to the architect's original plans.
The main terminal serves many airlines and a large number of destinations. It has a variety of restaurants, bars, newsstands and shops. Business services, currency exchange services and ATMs (cash machines) are also available.
Washington Dulles International Airport operates an unusual system for getting passengers to and from their planes. The main terminal handles functions such as check in and baggage claim. To get to and from airplanes passengers use planemates (essentially, large buses), mobile lounges (another type of large bus), and concourse buildings that stand independently in midfield.
