Access
There are several ways to travel between Atatürk International
Airport and the city centre.
Light Rail Service : Light rail service exists
between Aksaray and Atatürk International Airport. The
line goes through some major parts of the European side of
the city;
including the intercity bus terminal. The LRT takes the passengers
to Aksaray in 30–35 minutes.
Airport Shuttle Service : The shuttle services are operated
by Havas, which is one of the major ground handling companies
within Turkey. The buses run half-hourly to Bakirköy,
Yenikapi,
Aksaray, Taksim Square, hourly to Kozyatagi (on the Anatolian
side), two-hourly to Etiler-Akmerkez. Also, there is a fast
ferry terminal in Bakirköy which connects the terminal
to Bostanci and Kadiköy. Havas buses run between the
airport and the fast ferry terminal according to the departures
and arrivals of the ferries.
Municipality Bus : Municipality buses also run to Taksim,
Etiler and Kozyatagi. This is a slower but much cheaper alternative
than Havas.
Car : The airport is accessible through the coastal road,
D-100 international road and TEM (Trans-European Motorway).
Airport Overview
Istanbul's Atatürk International Airport at Yesilyurt,
20 km (12 miles) west of the city centre, is the busiest of
Turkey's major airports.
The airport is the major international airport in Istanbul.
Opened in 1924 and located in Yesilköy, on the European
side of the city. In 1980, the airport was renamed to
Atatürk International Airport in honour of Mustafa Kemal
Atatürk, the founder and the first president of the Republic
of Turkey. It is among the top 40 airports in the world in terms
of
total passenger traffic and the 19th busiest in the world in
terms of international passenger traffic. It was Europe's 8th
busiest airport in 2010.
A major international airport within the Marmara
region of Turkey the airport is the gateway to the cosmopolitan
metropolis of Istanbul.
Ataturk Airport is situated on the European side of Istanbul,
close to Bakirkoy, Faith, Litros, Mahmutbey and Kucukcekmece.
The suburb of Zeytinburnu is also nearby, just beyond Istanbul's
ancient Walls of Constantinople and situated directly to the
east, lying next to the coast of the Marmara Sea.
Istanbul Ataturk Airport handles flights to countries throughout
the European Union and worldwide and handles more than 32
million annual passengers, who are often
pleasantly surprised to find such a modern and stylish facility.
There are more than 60 passenger check-in decks onsite, and
so this operation is usually quick and efficient.
Atatürk shares traffic with Sabiha Gökçen
International Airport, which is on the Anatolian (Asian) side
of Istanbul, which had annual passenger traffic of just 11.1
million in 2010.
The two airports both provide domestic and international service
to the Istanbul area.
A third big airport is being planned in Silivri suburb of
Istanbul 40 km west of Istanbul, in order to meet Istanbul's
growing domestic and international air traffic demand
as a source, destination and transit point.

Country Information
Istanbul, historically known as Byzantium and Constantinople
is the largest city in Turkey and 2nd largest city proper
in the world with a population of 13 million,
also making it the largest metropolitan city proper in Europe
and the second largest metropolitan area in Europe by population.
Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural,
economic, and financial centre of Turkey. The city covers
39 districts of the Istanbul province. It is located on the
Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbour
known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country.
It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian
(Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus,
and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated
on two continents. Istanbul is a designated alpha world city.
Turkey is a transcontinental Eurasian country.
Asian Turkey (made up largely of Anatolia), which includes
97% of the country, is separated from European Turkey by the
Bosphorus,
the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles (which together form
a water link between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea).
European Turkey (eastern Thrace or Rumelia in the Balkan peninsula)
comprises 3% of the country.[70]
The territory of Turkey is more than 1,600 kilometres (1,000
mi) long and 800 km (500 mi) wide and is the world's 37th-largest
country in terms of area. The country is encircled by seas
on three sides: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea
to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Turkey
also contains the Sea of Marmara in the northwest.
Ölüdeniz Beach near Fethiye on the Turkish Riviera. The
European section of Turkey, Eastern Thrace, forms the borders
of Turkey with Greece and Bulgaria. The Asian part of the
country,
Anatolia, consists of a high central plateau with narrow coastal
plains, between the Köroglu and Pontic mountain ranges
to the north and the Taurus Mountains to the south.
Eastern Turkey has a more mountainous landscape and is home
to the sources of rivers such as the Euphrates, Tigris and
Aras, and contains Lake Van and Mount Ararat,
Turkey's highest point at 5,165 metres (16,946 ft). Lake Tuz,
Turkey's third-largest lake, is a macroscopically visible
feature in the middle of the
country that ironically happens to look like a turkey.
Turkey is divided into seven census regions: Marmara, Aegean,
Black Sea, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, Southeastern
Anatolia and the Mediterranean.
The uneven north Anatolian terrain running along the Black
Sea resembles a long, narrow belt. This region comprises approximately
one-sixth of Turkey's total land area.
As a general trend, the inland Anatolian plateau becomes increasingly
rugged as it progresses eastward.
Mount Ararat (Agri Dagi) is the highest peak in Turkey at
5,165 m (16,946 ft).Turkey's varied landscapes are the product
of complex earth movements that have
shaped the region over thousands of years and still manifest
themselves in fairly frequent earthquakes and occasional volcanic
eruptions. The Bosporus and the Dardanelles owe
their existence to the fault lines running through Turkey
that led to the creation of the Black Sea. There is an earthquake
fault line across the north
of the country from west to east, which caused a major earthquake
in 1999.
The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the
Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean Sea have a temperate Mediterranean
climate, with hot, dry summers and mild to cool, wet winters.
The coastal areas
of Turkey bordering the Black Sea have a temperate Oceanic
climate with warm, wet summers and cool to cold, wet winters.
The Turkish Black Sea coast receives the greatest amount
of precipitation and is the only region of Turkey that receives
high precipitation throughout the year. The eastern part of
that coast averages 2,500 millimeters
annually which is the highest precipitation in the country.
The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Sea of Marmara (including
Istanbul), which connects the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea,
have a transitional climate between
a temperate Mediterranean climate and a temperate Oceanic
climate with warm to hot, moderately dry summers and cool
to cold, wet winters. Snow does occur on the
coastal areas of the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea almost
every winter, but it usually lies no more than a few days.
Snow on the other hand is rare
in the coastal areas of the Aegean Sea and very rare in the
coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea.
Conditions can be much harsher in the more arid interior.
Mountains close to the coast prevent Mediterranean influences
from extending inland, giving the central Anatolian
plateau of the interior of Turkey a continental climate with
sharply contrasting seasons.
